Chicago is officially frozen. Lake Michigan and theChicago River look more like Antarctic ice bergs rather than water ways in a metropolitan city. With temperatures reading in the minuses, nothing can get or stay warm. This includes my office.
My office is a loft space that used to be the home of an old toy factory. Pretty neat history but someone should have told the builder that brick isn’t exactly the best insulation for -6 degrees. That is the actual air temp—not the wind chill.
Instead of fixing the problem of the insulation, the building manager eagerly handed out rickety space heaters, upon request, to keep the various office tenants warm (also see: people who bitch).
I have one of these rickety space heaters and could swear it’s the same one my grandmother had in her home 35 years ago. The outside of the heater is all metal with no place to touch the heater to reposition it while it is turned on. I guess burning a hole in my favorite jeans will have to do. Then there is the non-descript temperature dial. The dial reads OFF and HIGH. It would appear OFF and ON would provide more clarity since there is no LOW or MEDIUM to choose.
Throughout the day my rickety space heater randomly turns itself on and off. It seems like it is off more than on but when it is on, it cranks out the heat.
I called the building guy to see if they had any more heaters and they are out. I’m assuming I’m not the only cold, bitchy chick in the building. Unfortunately, now I have this rickety, randomly illuminated space heater that really should be in the Smithsonian instead of under my desk. The alternative is no space heater.
Hmm. Rickety wins.
Stay warm!
